After escaping Lothering at the start of the Fifth Blight, Hawke and their family made their way to Kirkwall to start a new life. +VERSE II: Inquisitor. — Screaming the name of a foreigner's god. In which Cassandra was able to find Hawke in time for the Conclave, during which they interfered with Corypheus’s plans and became the only survivor of the explosion. +VERSE III: Star Trek. — You can't take the sky from me. Hawke is an intergalactic smuggler/bootlegger with a heart of gold. They and their crew of misfits spend most of their time skirting around Federation rules to get people the things that they need whenever the bureaucratic red tape gets in the way. Perhaps they’ve made deals with a few Starfleet officials to help them get things done under the table. +
VERSE IV: Grishaverse. — Like calls to like. Hawke is a Heartrender/Healer whose skills quickly made a name for themself in the Barrel. They mainly run with the smuggler Athenril, who works out of Kerch. +VERSE V: Stranger Things. — Running up that hill. Once held in a similar lab to that portrayed on the show, Malcolm Hawke fell in love with a young nurse who worked there, Leandra Amell. Upon discovering that Leandra was pregnant with Malcolm’s child, the pair ended up fleeing the lab in the English countryside, determined to make a better life for their future children. Eventually, the family settled in Hawkins, where Amalia grew up helping to care for their younger siblings. At age 20, they have yet to pursue a higher education for themself in favor of working to help their family. +VERSE VI: Ted Lasso. — Believe in believe. A verse in which the Doctor found herself in a situation so dire, she resorted to using the CHAMELEON ARCH to rewrite her DNA once again. Now she's living as a human—a professor of astrophysics, among other sciences, by the name of Dr. Joan Smith. +VERSE III: Horizon. — So much more to discover before the world ends. (Crossover!) A DW canon-based universe that includes the events of HORIZON: ZERO DAWN & FORBIDDEN WEST. BIOGRAPHY. To say that Hatter is a less than upstanding citizen would be putting it lightly. As far as morality and ethics go, he likes to keep himself sitting pretty in the grey areas, where he'll have as much wiggle room as possible. He's concerned with survival above all else, and has found ways to make himself a necessity to people in power for that very reason.The Queen of Hearts needs him to keep the black market Tea trade as booming as it is and the Resistance needs him to keep them fed and informed. He plays both sides of the court so impeccably, pretending to still be fully under the Queen's thumb while helping her enemies, that it's kept him alive far longer than anyone realizes.This isn't to say he's all bad, of course. Underneath the facade of Tea Master, Hatter's actually a halfway decent guy. Strangely enough, there are moments when he wishes he weren't as good a person as he is, because in Wonderland having a good heart generally leads to death, exile or worse. So his sympathetic tendencies aren't entirely conducive to his preoccupation with survival in the Queen's world.But that is essentially what got him working with the Resistance in the first place. Already set up with the Queen thinking he'd broken under pressure, it was fairly easy to keep everyone fooled. Besides which, he's a magnificent liar and good at playing the game, having learned to look after himself quite quickly once it'd become necessary.So for now Hatter plays the Tea Master, putting on a show for the masses as needed and pretending to be a man so far removed from himself, he sometimes wonders which personality is truly his own. But so long as he's the only person in Wonderland capable of giving the Tea its extra kick (bit of a mad scientist teamaker, this one), he'll be safe from the Queen, and as long as he uses that position to help the Resistance, he'll be safe from them too. He'll survive.And that is, after all, the only thing he cares about...right?
VERSES
VERSE I: Main. — We're all mad here. Set before the events of Syfy's Alice. Hatter is living as comfortably as one can with a job like his, in a place like Wonderland, with a roommate like Chesh and a brother who's been warped into a monster by the Queen. For the most part he keeps his head down and, as Dodo so eloquently puts it, plays both sides of the court. It pays to have contacts in the Casino as well as the Resistance, though those involved with the latter are far more suspicious of his loyalties than the Queen. Nevertheless, he gets by working the black market Tea trade out of his beloved Tea Shoppe.A man made essential by his ability to give his Teas that extra kick the Queen's scientists can never quite replicate, Hatter survives by the skin of his teeth (and the string of Chesh's tooth, as it were). But something is rotten in the state of Wonderland, and it's only a matter of time before things come to a boil. +VERSE II: Secondary. — We could do pizza. Set after the events of Syfy's Alice. Hatter is slowly acclimating to life in Oysterland, living in an apartment of his own that he's managed not to burn down just yet. But the more time he spends in the human world, the more human he becomes, and his emotional state in the interim is decidedly unstable. His feelings become more intense while his senses are still muted, and for the first time he is experiencing something of what it must've been like for other fae to take the Teas he used to peddle. It's not pleasant.* Hatter is not automatically in a romantic relationship with Alice in this verse. He will react to her as a friend until the chemistry is found to be there (or not). +
VERSE III: Once Upon a Time. — Just a faery tale. Unbeknownst to Hatter, he's been yanked right out of Wonderland and into Storybrooke, Maine, where he now tends bar as Alec Milliner, owner of The Tea Shop pub. Charming and somewhat mysterious of background, Alec mostly keeps to himself. Though rumors abound he's not quite so wholesome as he seems, there's no real evidence of his involvement in any unsavory activities. For the most part, he's just a regular guy, if a bit secretive.As far as he's concerned, Alec is genuinely happy, but sometimes, for no apparent reason at all, he simply feels...sad. It was a small community where everyone knew everyone, and it was impossible to ignore the Time War when so many recognizable faces were disappearing to join the fight—Lian’s brother included.From an early age, she showed a special aptitude for discerning the most likely outcome of a given situation or conflict, regardless of its actual probability. This manifested itself through dreams so vivid they felt like memories when she woke from them. That, plus the fact that she’s always been clever and curious, could have made for a bright future on Gallifrey.
BIO CONT'D. Lian dreamed of Gallifrey’s destruction not long after the Doctor started to seriously consider it as an option. She didn’t know that, of course. She only knew that her planet was going to die and it was too traumatic a vision for her to keep it from her mother.She was effectively forced to leave by a mother who wanted nothing more than for her daughter to live a full life, even if it had to be a fraction of the length it was supposed to be. So, she set their TT-Capsule’s coordinates for Earth and strapped Lian into the Chameleon Arch.She was only the Gallifreyan equivalent of about sixteen years old when she saw her home planet for the last time. Lian looked out as the ship left the atmosphere, just before the Chameleon Arch activated. Then there was pain, followed by nothingness.Until she woke up on the front steps of a library in Deer Isle, Maine, curled around a satchel full of papers and a few personal effects, one hand clutching a broken pocket watch. She stumbled into town confused and delirious, knowing only that her name was Lian Wen and she had no family. The papers in her bag confirmed this, and while she was originally found and cared for by an older woman named Aggie Potter, she was soon placed in foster care.Lian lived on the island for the next twenty years, adopting the nickname “Lin” and eventually revisiting the library where she was found, just outside of the port town of Stonington. With some work and a few years studying for a degree in library science, Lin opened the building to the public and made it a place people could go without paying to be there.The library was, unbeknownst to Lin, the ship that had carried her from Gallifrey and deposited her safely on Earth. Subtle signs, like aisles always being just long enough for someone to find what they’re looking for, or there always being more space for new books to come in, might give this away to anyone who knows a TARDIS when they see one.That’s the gist of Lin’s background up until she’s discovered and encouraged to open the watch and become herself again. When she does, she takes the time to integrate her human life into her long-term memory, melding two minds into one as best she can. This way, she’s able to avoid the uncomfortable possibility of regressing to the maturity level of a teenager in the body of a 36-year-old woman.She is, however, stunted in some areas (ex: advanced telepathic capabilities) that she’d have learned about on Gallifrey. Lin’s full potential has not been realized, and she’s eager to learn and grow and fall in love with the universe.

Like most city elves, Mei-Lin grew up in a human settlement, segregated among other elves in the run-down district known as Denerim’s alienage. Her earliest memories are of the tiny three-room hovel kept as clean as her mother could manage while her father spent most days seeking whatever work a Dalish elf could find within a culture that so thoroughly derides his people. His troubles were compounded by the markings on his face, the Dalish being so often treated worse for their refusal to assimilate and labeled savages because of it. Mei was too young to understand any of this before Athim Surana died, nor did she grasp how much his daughter’s fascination with his Vallaslin meant to him after a long day of being turned away for the markings.After his passing it became more and more difficult to keep their family from starvation. In time, Mei-Lin’s brother, Taren, grew old enough to slip out of the city and collect herbs for their mother, Jun, to craft into potions, salves and teas they were then able to trade or sell. She made a point of teaching herbalism to both her children, as it is a useful and potentially life-saving skill—even if only to ensure they could tell the difference between plants that were safe for eating and plants that would serve them better against their enemies.Mei-Lin’s magic started to manifest early enough that she’s never been sure exactly when it happened. It came on subtly at first, in a way she didn’t know could be labeled “magic.” About a year after her father died, at the age of five, Mei began to see him. Just flickers in the corner of her eye at first, then a full apparition. When she mentioned it to her mother, she was gently rebuffed, as Jun feared what it meant for her daughter and hoped no more would come of it; prayed that it was simply the overactive imagination of a lonely child and nothing else.
BIO CONT'D. Taren was more willing to listen, though he only encouraged Mei’s talk of spirits when Jun couldn’t hear them. Ever the practical—and protective—sort, he wanted to know for sure if his sister had magic so they could be better prepared for the dangers of harboring a mage. Given that their mother had the general health and welfare of their family on her shoulders already, Taren was prepared to take responsibility for keeping Mei-Lin safe from Templars, even at ten years old. Even when it caused him pain.And it did. The first time Mei’s magic fully manifested was in her sleep. She doesn’t remember what the nightmare was about, only waking up in a state of extreme panic, unable to discern between what was real and what was not. There were hands on her shoulders and then what seemed like many voices shouting at once. She remembers opening her eyes to Taren convulsing wildly and Jun holding his head to keep it from cracking against the floor. In her terror and confusion, Mei had lashed out when he tried to wake her—so much raw lightning energy flooding from such a small frame. There’d be lasting effects from this, and he would take great pains to hide them from her.Even so, Mei was afraid of her magic for a time after that. Taren did everything he could to help her through this also, reminding her again and again that it wasn’t her fault (an important truth) and that she hadn’t hurt him very much anyway (a well-intentioned lie). But there was one thing he repeated more than any of the rest, that he made her say over and over until she started to believe it, until it was stuck so firmly in her mind that not even a decade in the Circle could convince her otherwise: Her magic was a gift and never a curse; something to be nurtured rather than feared.As helpless as Mei felt in the alienage, being young and elven and brimming with magic she didn’t know how to use, it was Taren’s voice in the back of her mind that kept her willful in the tower. It was his words that kept inspiring her to learn, without fear, how to harness her magic, and it made her feel powerful for the first time.But the road to feeling powerful ran through a gauntlet of fear and loneliness. The Templars came for Mei when she was ten. Taren had taken her with him to forage for herbs outside the city, and they were unlucky enough to encounter a group of human boys—at least five, maybe more, but memory tends to exaggerate. It was clear from the start that they were looking for trouble, and Taren knew it. EMPATHIC PERCEPTION
Empathic perception has several different levels and many abilities associated with it. As it develops, it branches out into some areas that one might not expect. This is a quick guide or crash course in the basic and expanded powers as they pertain to Sigyn's current abilities.BASIC ABILITIES: Sensing the emotions, temperaments, hopes, desires, and fears of other living beings; projecting emotions onto others; intuitive knowledge & understanding; minor ability to read auras; intuitive polygraphy (lie detection)Beyond basic empathy, Sigyn's power has developed to include five main extrasensory abilities.1. CLAIRAUDIENCE. The ability to "hear" thoughts associated with certain heightened emotions; usually manifests in the form of images or snippets of words. Stronger emotions and/or bonds can allow echoes of fuller thoughts through said bonds.
2. TELEMPATHY. Projecting emotions and/or thoughts into the minds of others; limited to brief images, feelings, or thought-echoes. Can be used as a form of communication. With practice, one can project so subtly that the receiver believes the thoughts or feelings to be their own, though Sigyn is highly unlikely to ever use it in this way.
3. CLAIREMPATHY. Sensing emotions over great distances. Can manifest in the form of dreams (or nightmares) while asleep and anxiety if gone ignored during wakeful hours. Strong enough emotions can cause shock. Has its limits (ex: someone an entire universe away will be little more than a flickering candle on Sigyn's empathic radar).
4. CLAIRVOYANCE. Sensing when someone is in danger or under otherwise great emotional stress. Limited to those she has developed an emotional connection with. Varies in degree; strong enough feelings can wake her from a dead sleep. With great concentration, this ability also allows Sigyn to locate the person in question.
5. EMPATHIC HEALING. The siphoning of negative emotions out of one person into herself, briefly relieving them of their pain. Most volatile and dangerous manifestation of Sigyn's empathic perception. Causes the receiving empath both physical and emotional pain, sometimes agonizing depending on the depth and force of the emotions taken. Sigyn would compare this to slapping a bandaid on a gaping wound, treating the symptom and not the source. When someone she loves is in great pain, she has to actively prevent herself from instinctively using this ability to help them. She would typically only use this in an emergency (ex: someone's emotions are posing an imminent threat to their wellbeing or that of the people around them).
There are, however, some more dangerous powers Sigyn far more rarely taps into, for they involve manipulating others' emotions regardless of their will. Empathic manipulation is a blanket term for abilities that control and change the emotions of others. It's one of the more invasive applications of empathy that Sigyn tries to avoid.There are four closely related main "forms" of empathic manipulation:1. EMOTION AUGMENTATION. Includes the instilling and/or augmenting of love, hate, fear, rage, desire, sadness, etc. and any combinations or variations therein. With practice, one could make someone feel anything she wanted them to feel or take what they already feel and twist it into whatever she pleased. One of the subtler uses would be a sort of persuasive power, and one of the more insidious would be instilling a thought or feeling into the mind exactly right so that person believed it was their own thought or feeling all along.
2. SERENITY INDUCEMENT. Instilling peace and calm through touch or close proximity. For some, this ability can become instinctive in the presence of people they know well, or even be used as a defense mechanism against volatile emotions that may trigger violence. With a single touch, Sigyn can will a sense of calm into another person. It is even possible to use this ability to put someone into a deep sleep.
3. APATHY INDUCEMENT. Removal and/or suppression of all emotions in oneself or in another person. This can be used to pinpoint and remove a single emotion or expansively suppress all of them. An empath may shut herself down on instinct in times of great emotional distress.
4. EMPATHIC INUNDATION. The act of flooding another being's mind with enough emotions to incapacitate them. When used as a weapon, it can be incredibly effective. Effects can range anywhere from headaches and unconsciousness to madness and death. An empath with enough power and skill to overload another being must take great care in how these abilities are utilized. Driving someone to madness or death through empathic inundation takes its toll on the empath as well as the individual under attack. Empathy is a give and take ability, and pouring such extreme levels of emotion into another person comes at a cost. The empath will feel exactly what that person is feeling for the duration of the attack. No being can feel such things without being somehow affected. Over time and with enough use, this ability can drive the empath herself to madness.
VERSES
VERSE I: Main. — Galdrs hapt. Sigyn, goddess of constancy and empathy, embodiment of loyalty and faith, is not quite so lofty in lifestyle as such an introduction might imply. She is a healer and an herbalist by trade and study, far more invested in the quiet strength of tending wounds than the strength of violence that inflicts them. Nowadays, Sigyn mainly splits her time between Asgard and Midgard. When she’s not busy chasing her sons or wrangling wounded Asgardians for healing, she enjoys wandering among humanity, gaining insight into their ways and learning their customs. It’s an interesting way to explore her empathic abilities besides, as human emotions tend to be strong and fast and complex by comparison to the Æsir and their kin. +VERSE II: MCU. — Constant marvels. Though her role as a healer has tempered her some over the years, Sigyn remains a goddess of fiercely independent spirit. Clever and charming though she may be, keeping most people at arm’s length is a manner of self-preservation. She’s slowly learning to open up more, but it takes a special sort to capture her interest. Recent events have piqued her curiosity about other realms, and the realm of Midgardians in particular. Their strength and resilience even against seemingly impossible odds certainly intrigue her, and she’s taken to visiting Midgard every now and again for the sake of meeting people and learning more about humanity. +VERSE III: Queen of Asgard (MCU). — Gilded healer. Following the events of The Dark World and Loki’s successful usurpation of the throne, Sigyn finds herself suddenly thrust into the role of Asgard’s queen and All-Mother. Ill-prepared but quick to learn, she is doing her best to follow the example laid out by Frigga before her, though in her heart she’s not able to consider herself a worthy replacement for the late queen. Sigyn’s relationships with those she once considered friends have grown understandably strained. The circumstances of her ascension to the throne put her at odds with the likes of Sif and the Warriors Three. Elevation has come coupled with a new form of alienation as unanticipated as taking up the crown. With fulfilling her queenly duties, tempering her sycophantic husband and her first child on the way, it’s all she can do to keep the balance. +VERSE IV: Dragon Age. — In every end there is also a beginning. As a spirit of Empathy trapped in human form, Sigyn has taken the name of her vessel and embraced her fate, seeking to help the Warden end the Fifth Blight. So long as she must remain on the wrong side of the Veil, she will do what she can to preserve the life she so cherishes. +VERSE V: Ted Lasso. — Believe in believe. After mentioning a passing interest in football to her husband at dinner one evening, Sigyn Solveig finds herself in possession of a football club. VERSE VII: The Almighty Johnsons. — Goddess among men. Sigyn has been reincarnated in the form of Dr. Nikola Solveig, a psychotherapist currently working out of Auckland, New Zealand. Nik is fully aware that she is the living incarnation of Sigyn, as there was quite a big to-do about becoming a goddess on her 21st birthday, but she tends to avoid other, unfamiliar gods as much as possible. It’s nothing personal, really—she’s just got a bit of a problem with the idea of running into Loki. Even without her empathic memory of multiple exhausting encounters with her would-be husband, Nik just plain doesn’t like the idea of imprinting on some stranger like a baby duck and having her entire life change by no choice of her own. Destiny be damned; Nikola wants a say in where her life leads. +VERSE VIII: Vampire. — Blood on my name. Many centuries ago, Sigyn’s humanity was stolen from her by a stranger who abandoned her to awaken, alone and possessed of a deep hunger for blood. Bereft of any form of guidance in her new half-life, she’s been on a steady spiral of self-loathing ever since, starving herself for fear of killing only to snap and leave multiple bodies in her wake. Avoiding humans and vampires alike, Sigyn is a distant, lonely soul. Her legacy is little more than a trail of carnage and a desperate wish that her own death might stop her from causing that of so many others. +VERSE IX: The Hunger Games. — Staying the odds. Sigyn Solveig, Victor of the 72nd Annual Hunger Games, is known as the Sweetheart of District Five—but don’t let the nickname fool you. Raised by a washed-up Victor from District Two, the odds were never really in her favor, but that didn’t stop her from winning the Games. Despite her mother’s best efforts to train her like a Career, Sigi just wasn’t cut out for killing, but when her name was called at the reaping no voice rose to volunteer. Fourteen-years-old and all elbows-n-knees for a scrawny frame, she had to rely on patience and clever tactics. Taking advantage of the non-threatening angle, Sigyn played nurse for the Careers, mixing herbal treatments for their wounds and even bringing one of them back from the brink of death. Little did they know, all the healing salves she used hid traces of deadly belladonna. Hiding behind a veil of sweetness, Sigi slowly and patiently poisoned her allies so that by the time they realized her betrayal, it was much too late—and the Careers had already taken care of the rest of the competition, making Sigyn one of very few Victors to survive the arena without spilling any blood herself. +VERSE X: The Lord of the Rings. — Regret undying & never wholly assuaged. Sigyn is an ancient elf of the Noldor who resides between Lórien and Rivendell. She is a highly skilled healer with magic and herbs, as well as a skilled warrior with her shield and glaive. They even dated for a while, but he was away at college, and she was no good at keeping touch, and it would be almost a decade before they'd meet again in Purgatory. +VERSE III: Dragon Age. — Take spirit from the long ago. A verse set in the world of DRAGON AGE. Wynonna is the black sheep of Zathrian's clan, and all too eager to assist the Warden when they arrive to recruit the Dalish. If her assistance in the Brecilian Forest is accepted, Wy is then recruitable as a companion at the end of the Nature of the Beast quest. If her help is not accepted, she will still approach the Warden as they leave following completion of the quest and make a final attempt to convince them she'd be an asset to their group. +VERSE IV: Dragon Age (Secondary). — Wicked eyes & wicked hearts. Wynonna is a noblewoman hailing from the Free Marches. Unbeknownst to her for many years, she is in fact a mage. VERSE VI: Modern. — Another life I might've had. After accidentally shooting her own father in a PANIC during a home invasion as a child, Wynonna was never quite the same. Though her elder sister was still around, it took all three remaining Earps some time to move past that experience—but Willa never really let Wynonna forget what she did, and Wynonna never really had the courage to fight Willa's thoughts on how she lived her life. However, once Wynonna had her own place, an apartment where she lived with her best friend, things started to look up. With some distance between herself and her sister, she had more room to make her own choices. +VERSE VII: Harry Potter. — Something wicked this way comes. The Earp family has a long history of hunting werewolves dating back to the infamous hunter Wyatt Earp. Though times have changed since the indiscriminate practices of her ancestors, Wynonna was raised on PREJUDICE for the first twelve years of her life. It was during holiday break of her second year at Hogwarts that the Seven attacked her family at home. Terrifed, Wynonna grabbed her father’s wand—passed down through the GENERATIONS from Wyatt Earp himself, it had known many masters and several different wand cores. In a flash of wild, panicked magic, her father was dead, Waverly was SCREAMING, and Willa was simply gone.Wynonna was never the same person after that. She became GUARDED and difficult, her troublemaking behavior escalating into recklessness while her grades steadily dropped. That was when she started to hide them under cloaks and curls—and also when she resolved to get very good at stealing the baker's bread.Sigrún belonged nowhere and to no one, and that awareness filled her up. Even her blood set her apart from a city dominated by humans, and she never dared approach the rare elven envoys whenever they came through. She would hide among the crowd instead, watching the elves as they passed with their lifted chins and graceful strides. The closer she got, the farther away they seemed.With her ears hidden, she was invisible; a child of two worlds, belonging to neither. This was her life. The earliest experiences she can clearly recall: a human baker's rage and the cool distance of elves. For all she knows now, she was simply sprung from the earth at the age of five, with no living memory of a time before, because there was nothing for her to remember. It never occurred to her to wonder how she knew her own age, or why it seemed that she alone among the urchins in Bóbryck was able to read and write. Even the certainty of her own name could be perceived as suspect, given that the happenings of her youngest years a blank expanse of nothingness. Just an empty space shrouded in fog around the fringes of her conscious mind.At least, she always assumed it was empty. It was such a yawning void, Sigrún never dared venture into it. In the beginning, she teetered at the edge of it with nothing between her present and her missing past to keep her from falling into the chasm. Once or twice, she tried to tried to recall something—anything—only to be gripped with a unique introspective terror she’s never felt since. But with time came experience, and experience settled into memory—and the more she had to remember, the less she thought about the things she could not. Before long, Sigrún stopped concerning herself with it altogether, more worried about the immediate problem of survival, the burning hunger in her belly. Where she’d come from wasn’t nearly as important as where she was going to find her next meal, or avoiding the city guard when there were stolen pastries in her pockets.As one year turned into two, Sigrún learned to embrace her invisibility, as it was often the very thing that kept her alive. In shadows, she felt the most at home—which is to say, close enough to safe that she could almost relax enough to rest. But more importantly, she could often move around unseen, and in pique hours at the marketplace, she made the crowd into her hiding place. Small hands slipped easily into unguarded pockets, and the noise covered her when she crawled under tables to snatch things from distracted vendors.From pockets, she lifted whatever her fingers closed around first. Sometimes it was a shiny gold piece, others an odd knick-knack. She even lifted a deck of cards off a man who’d set up shop at the edge of the market, challenging passersby to guess which cup hid the silver piece they’d gambled as he moved the cups too quickly to follow. They were used, but in good condition, wrapped in cloth inside a small metal box. Of all the trinkets, that and a glass knight from a chess set became her favorites. Once she learned to shuffle the cards, she found it even calmed her enough that she could sleep, yet still no longer than a few hours at a time.
There were times, of course, that Sigrún was caught stealing, but she was quick and quiet and she knew where to find all the hiding places small enough to hide a child and close enough to the ground that they’d be overlooked by grown men. The first time she was truly caught was also the last time she had to steal out of necessity. After that encounter, she only stole for fun.It was an unusually cold day in the middle of autumn. Sigrún had been collecting coins since the end of summer, trying to save enough for the cloak she felt sure she’d need in what promised to be an especially harsh winter. The legal merchants weren’t likely to sell to someone like her, though, always suspecting the truth about how she’d acquired the coin. That meant turning to less savory sources that wouldn’t ask so many questions. Unfortunately, the few who would sell to her were well aware of how scant the options were for a child on the street, hiking their prices because they knew there were no other options. Taking advantage of the poor, who could already barely have afforded the wares at market, if the merchants were actually willing.With this in mind, Sigrún slipped into the crowd as she always had, watching carefully for the most distracted shoppers, waiting for exactly the right moment to act on each mark. But she wasn’t careful enough, she soon learned, as she stepped lightly in behind a woman browsing the wares of a seamstress whose silks must’ve come from somewhere far away. That much Sigrún could glean from what she heard of the conversation between the two adults. Such luxuries mattered little to one who had to save for weeks to afford the simplest cloak. All it truly meant to her was that this woman likely had a lot of coin to spare. She could see the purse tied loosely to the woman’s belt, revealed each time she gestured to a swatch of fabric hanging behind the seamstress.Sigrún let the small shiv tucked in her sleeve slip into her palm, feeling her heartbeat quicken in her chest as it always did just before she took what wasn’t hers. There was an edge to the excitement this time, an intuition she knew too little to heed. The next time the woman’s elbow lifted, Sigrún reached out, cutting the purse strings and catching the pouch with one quick motion. But it was heavier even than she’d predicted, enough for anyone to notice the weight suddenly missing, and Sigrún realized too late that only someone of great confidence—or great arrogance—would carry so much gold where any common thief could see. The woman grabbed her wrist almost immediately, as if she’d been waiting for someone to try what Sigrún had so foolishly done. Sigrún dropped the purse, and the woman caught it so easily with her other hand, all the while maintaining her hold on Sigrún’s wrist with a grip too tight for her to slip free, even with her small hands. Tight enough to bruise.It all happened so quickly, Sigrún could only stare up into the face of the woman she’d attempted to rob, eyes wide with shock. There was something familiar about her features, a distance Sigrún associated with the elves and yet her cheeks were rounder than theirs. But her eyes were the most striking feature of all, sharper than the shiv cutting into Sigrún’s palm, and she smiled like the curve of a scythe.“Clever little thing,” the woman said. Even her voice was primed to cut. “Almost got away with my favorite coin purse. If only you’d been a little...quicker.” She gave Sigrún’s wrist an extra squeeze, forcing the shiv deeper into the child’s palm, drawing out a quiet whimper of pain. The first sound she’d made in days. “Do you know what the penalty is for stealing?” Sigrún remained silent and unmoving, almost entranced—or perhaps merely petrified. “In some places, you would lose this hand.” Yet another squeeze for emphasis, and this time Sigrún winced and blinked, glancing anxiously around, though she knew no one would care enough to help. Even the seamstress had backed away from her table, busying her hands with gathering up her silks while casting the occasional nervous glance their way.It seemed a hopeless, helpless situation the likes of which Sigrún had never encountered before, even having lived on the streets for several years. The afternoon had begun to wane into evening, the market emptying as merchants gathered up their wares to close their stalls for the night. Soon the place would be empty, leaving her alone with the woman whose steely eyes were studying her with greater and greater interest.As the moments dragged on in silence, so too did the intensity build. Gripped with an equally intense swell of desperation, Sigrún made a last attempt to squirm herself free. Gritting her teeth against the pain, she twisted her wrist hard and pushed down against the woman’s thumb. She did not allow herself the luxury of surprise when her bleeding hand broke out of the woman’s grasp. She could only run.Looking back, Sigrún would often wonder if Ragna Coldbane had set a test for her in their first meeting. If so, she must have passed it. Why else would the well-feared head of a successful smuggling ring have been waiting for her when she finally returned to the hovel she’d been squatting in, late that night?[WIP]

VERSES
VERSE I: Neverland. — Pan's left hand. (Age 14) Whether or not the Shadow knew Rufio was biologically female when it recruited him, he neither knows nor cares. Either way, he’s more than earned his keep, climbing up the ranks with keen instincts and a determination to survive that far outweighs any sense of decency inside him. Frozen at fourteen years, the island’s magic has all but extinguished Rufio’s fear that growing up might add complications to his disguise. Second only to Felix in Pan’s favor, he is every bit as ruthless as his companions can be. Though admittedly, Rufio doesn’t always take quite so much pleasure in cruelty as they seem to, neither does he see anything wrong with their behavior. +VERSE II: The Enchanted Forest. — Neverland exile. (Age 14-17) Fallen from favor, Rufio struggles to find a place in a realm with its own dangers and chaos quite different from what she grew accustomed to in Neverland. For the most part, she keeps to herself and stays off the beaten track, moving through the forest and never staying in one place for too long. If nothing else, her time in Neverland instilled her with a knack for surviving most anything. She’ll survive this as well, and the pain over Pan’s betrayal has done nothing but fuel the fire in her heart. . +VERSE III: Cursed. — Storybrooke ending. (Age 17) Rajni Singh is an oddity of one to be sure, and a troublemaker to boot, spending more time in the principal’s office than she does in class. Her teachers attribute her acting out to a lack of parental guidance in her life, but Raj maintains she just finds it amusing to piss them off. The only place she seems to truly feel at home is at the camp where she works year round as a counselor. Most would find it strange how easily Raj is able to herd the kids there and keep them in line, but somehow the role just suits her. Still, there is something not quite right within her. A wild, feral creature that stirs every once in a while—and is proving a genuine struggle to suppress. +
VERSE IV: Post-Curse. — Conflicting realities. (Age 17-18) While the rest of Storybrooke rejoiced at the breaking of Regina’s curse that brought on the return of their memories, one former Lost Boy found herself suddenly on the verge of a mental breakdown. All at once, Rufio remembered, and with the remembering came a doubling down on the trauma of one of Pan’s most favored friends pets for more than a hundred years. Since then she’s cut almost everyone out of her life that she once considered her friends during the curse, finding their warmth and their normalness frustrating—if not infuriating. It’s better for them all if she keeps her distance, whether they like it or not. +VERSE V: Post-Neverland Arc. — Ghosts that we knew. (Age 18+) Following Pan’s attempt to take over Storybrooke with his own version of Regina’s curse, the entire town inexplicably disappeared and Rufio found herself standing in the middle of the woods in Maine with nothing to go on but her own rusty survival skills. After an unexpected (and decidedly violent) reunion with her old pal Felix, the two strike up an uneasy alliance. It’s all about survival, and until either of them comes up with a better way to go about that, they’re unhappily in it together—again. +VERSE VI. — Verse title.
